Applying for a Driving Licence
To get a permanent driving licence, start by applying for a learner's licence online using these steps:
1. Start Your Application:
- Visit the official website: https://parivahan.gov.in/parivahan/.
- Click on the "More" option under the "Drivers/Learner License" section.
- Choose your respective state and select "Apply For Learner Licence".
2. Follow Instructions:
- Carefully read the Application Submission Instructions.
- Click the "Continue" button to proceed.
3. Aadhaar Authentication:
- Opt for "Submit Via Aadhaar Authentication".
- Enter your Aadhaar number, generate and authenticate using the OTP, then click "Proceed".
4. Enter Your Details:
- Fill in your qualifications, blood group, email ID, and mobile number.
- Complete the "Self Declaration (Form 1)" by answering health-related questions and click "Submit".
5. Document Upload and Payment:
- Upload the required documents as prompted.
- Make the payment for your driving licence application and submit your completed application.
Completing Your Learner Licence Test:
1. Access the Test:
- Navigate to "Online LL Test (STAL)" on the Sarathi portal.
2. Application Verification:
- Input your application number and the captcha code displayed, then click “Submit”.
3. Taking the Test:
- Follow the on-screen instructions carefully to complete your Learner Licence test.
Applying for a Permanent Licence
To get a permanent driving licence, follow these simple steps after having your learner's licence for at least 30 days:
- Go back to the Sarathi portal and choose your state.
- Click on "Apply for Driving Licence" and complete the application form.
- Upload needed documents, including your learner's licence.
- Schedule your driving test.
- Pay the fee online and check if the payment went through.
Pass your driving test, and your permanent licence will be mailed to you, usually arriving within seven days.
Downloading/Printing Your Licence
- Immediately After the Test: If successful, your driving licence will be displayed on the screen. You have the option to download or print it directly.
- If Not Immediately Available: Should the print option not be available immediately, please wait for 24–48 hours before trying again. This advice is applicable to successful candidates.

Types of Driving Licences
- Learning License: This is a temporary licence that validates your eligibility to learn to drive on Indian roads. It's valid for six months.
- Permanent Driving License: Issued to drivers who have mastered driving skills and successfully cleared the driving test. This licence is valid for 20 years or until the holder turns 50, whichever comes first.
- Commercial Driving Licence: If you intend to drive transport vehicles or ferry passengers for commercial purposes, you'll need a commercial driving licence.
- International Driving Permit: An International Driving Permit is required for driving in foreign lands.
